The interdisciplinary joint project DiBiWohn comprises basic and applied research in the areas of empirical educational research, gerontology, and media education. The project is aimed at older residents in assisted living arrangements and care facilities – a group which has not been adequately targeted by educational and digitalization offers so far. The joint project comprises four project partners with the following five foci of research and activity:

On the one hand, this subproject applies quantitative follow-up methods to investigate the digitization of older technology companions (digital voluntary work in old age) and of residents in assisted living arrangements and care facilities (looking at digital media use, attitude towards technology, and digital literacy, among others). In addition, the digital transformation in facilities for older people (e.g. technological and digital infrastructure and digitization strategy) is examined.
On the other hand, this subproject investigates processes of education and mediatization of older technology novices resulting from the peer-to-peer setting longitudinally. In this context, effects on the living environment (e.g. digital literacy and autonomy, social and civic participation, mobility, and obsolescence) are explored as well.

Basic questions of educational theory, such as the recording of (digital) educational and appropriation processes, are examined via biographical and problem-centered interviews with residents in assisted living arrangements and care facilities for older people. During the course of the project, the team will also examine aspects of social participation, and analyze the impact of the newly developed educational formats on a socio-spatial level. To this end, the team coordinates the qualitative methods and processes in the project.

The aim of this subproject is to develop and design individual customized offers for education and support together with residents in assisted living arrangements and care facilities for older people. Since the project is based on the premise that older people are experts in their own lives, a participatory approach to research and education is applied. In the first project phase, these questions were examined at five practice locations in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate each. In the coming project phase, a multi-stage transfer concept is developed. This will enable the transfer of results to other forms of housing, other facilities, and other regions.

The MedienKompetenz Forum Südwest Foundation (MKFS) is responsible for the acquisition of suitable residential facilities for older people in Rhineland-Palatinate, that will be involved in project-related re-search processes such as participation programs, biographical and social space research, and media ger-ontological research. The research focus of the MKFS is the co-creative development of learning materi-als, which will be used both for the qualification and continuous training of technology companions from assisted living arrangements and care facilities, as well as for informal learning with the technology novices.
The learning material is constantly evaluated and further developed. Based on the results, a digital training and networking platform is being set up, which primarily targets the technology companions from Rhine-land-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg involved in the project. In the transfer phase, this platform will be opened up nationwide to technology companions from outside the project.

On the one hand, this subproject is in charge of the field access to residents in the facilities of the Evange-lische Heimstiftung, coordinating the data collection and supporting the participatory learning setting. Technology novices are recruited through information events with the project partners. In addition, social services and facility managers are acquired for collaboration. They play multiple roles in the project, providing field access and introducing the tablets at the project locations as well as acting as gatekeepers for the integration of educational offers in the facilities.
On the other hand, this subproject includes participating in the data collection and evaluation with qualita-tive methods. This will improve the contextualization of results and the success of the practice transfer of the educational concept.
